3 Reasons Christians Should Care About Politics

Posted on October 8, 2020October 8, 2020by Rebekah

It’s not uncommon for me to come upon a Christian who jokingly quips, “I’m just not interested in politics,” or “Politics just aren’t my thing” especially in light of the upcoming presidential elections just 27 days away. I was talking with someone the other day about this very topic and he made a statement that […]

Learning to Love the Life You Never Wanted

Posted on September 11, 2020September 10, 2020by Rebekah

I don’t know about you guys, but I tend to define my life through the lens of progress. I’ve mentioned this before, but I am a type-A personality and I am all about the goals, the five-year plans, the drive, and the potential that I’m “wasting”.  Am I where I want to be right now? […]

✨ 𝙲𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚒𝚝𝚢 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚠𝚊𝚟𝚎𝚜 𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚎𝚜...𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝'𝚜 𝚘𝚔𝚊𝚢 ✨

Sometimes, the ocean of creativity and ideas within us is calm. It's serene. So serene you can see your face on the surface of it, and sigh in desperation when there seems to be no "next project" or "book" shimmering prettily beneath the surface.

It just is.

Empty.
Dark.
Lonely.
Quiet.

"Will I ever create/write again?" The thought tickles at the back of our hearts, and we ignore it, but sometimes it's hard. But creativity comes in waves sometimes, and as Creatives, we MUST learn to be okay with the quiet and make peace with it.

Soak in the stillness. Read the books you didn't have time for back then. Take long walks in your neighborhood. Play the piano. Daydream. Breathe. Think. Be.

Creativity is, just as much as it is loud and overpowering at times, quiet and gentle. Tender and kind. It's loving. It's beautiful. We must tend to it gently and have grace with ourselves when we are in a lull.

It won't last forever. You will create/write again, and you WILL make it through.

✨ WHEN WILL YOU BE READY? ✨ You may never be ✨ WHEN WILL YOU BE READY? ✨

You may never be ready, but what if---right now---you decide that you are. What if you decide to throw off the fear of opinons and judgement and create art that comes from a place where you are empowered to create authentically as YOURSELF?

What if you instad of saying, "Yeah, but what if...."

Forget that. Drop that "but". Instead ask: "What if....I fly? What if...I soar? What if....I find myself out there where the waves kiss the sky? What if....what if....I find where I was always meant to be?"

You will never know until you just *start* and see where the magic takes you. ✨

Don't settle, art is an exploration. You have permission to explore as much as you need to without shame. Explore, try new things, find yourself amongst the mess of creativity, and embrace the person you will be afterwards.

Do it for yourself. Do it for your art. Don't let anyone hold you back.

You authentic artistic endvours are so needed right now.

Be. You.

✨ 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥...✨

The world is a crazy place right now, and I'll be the first to admit that I wish I could just crawl into a hole and wait until it's all over. But we are not called to roll over and die. We are called to stand firm, to lift each other up, and to be compassionate with one another despite our differences.

And right now, there are a lot of differences. There is a lot of hurt. There is a lot of uncertainty. And to be honest, I almost didn't post today because I didn't know what to say. I didn't know how to address each and every one of your aches. So, I will just say, I'm hurting with you. I'm anxious with you. I'm questioning with you. But I'm also hopeful.

I'm hopeful in healing. I'm hopeful in truth. I'm hopeful in better days to come when we can embrace each other as one instead of two parties that hate the guts out of each other. We are first and foremost Americans. Not a party. Americans. Humans. For heavens sake, humans.

I think we all forget this too often.

One day, we will heal. One day, there will be no hate. One day, but until then, I'll keep hoping and dreaming of that place.

For now, I hope we can all be more tender and compassionte with each other. 💜

✨ SOMETIMES CREATING SUCKS ✨

*blinks* What? 🤷‍♀️ It’s true!

Sometimes creating is:

- Soul-sucking
- Devastating,
- Draining
- Anxiety-producing
- Etc.

BUT! That doesn’t mean you aren’t cut out for it. It doesn’t mean you are doing something wrong. It doesn’t mean you are a failure. Why? Because life isn’t always fluffy clouds, rainbows, sunshine, and warm breezes. Creating is hard work and it’s going to feel like work some days, but that’s okay because if you truly love it, you’ll keep coming back.

Don’t sweat it, and know that you aren’t alone. I have wanted to throw the towel in so many times, throw away my computer, and pout but hey! I’m still here and you will get through this, but for now, let yourself be.

It’s okay to be in this place.

It will pass but until it does, have grace on yourself.

✨ 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 ✨ ✨ 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 ✨

Dear Creative,

For too long I based my worth in the things I created, in the works I did, in the success of my art, and watched myself crumble as a result.

I'm an artist. Part of my job is to leave a little bit of myself in the art I create, and what I do takes up a big part of my life, but I am NOT my art. It's NOT who I am.

I am more than words strung together on a page, I am more than red-gritty eyes staring at a blue-lit screen well past midnight, I am more than my prose, and I am more than how good my plot is.

I (and you!) am fire, magic, water, moonlight, sunshine, a summer breeze blowing through the valley, and an intricately complex human being with wants, needs, fears, and doubts that go deeper than what we could ever write/create.

If you are going to survive at this job, you are going to need to make this boundary and reinstate it day after day. Remind yourself often that the oxygen filling your lungs, the sunlight warming your cheeks, and the beat of your heart underneath golden skin is more.

More than work.
More than numbers.
More than reviews.
More than the haters.
More than the artist pursuits you chase.

Yes, you are an artist, but you are a human first.

Never let yourself be constrained to the quality/reach of your work or you are going to spend a lifetime never being enough for yourself.

✨ 𝐈 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 ✨

If no one has told you yet today, you are so incredible.

No, really. Just think about it. It's a miracle you are alive, breathing, living...existing. I know you may feel like no one cares, or that you are just a small decimal in a big number but you are so much more.

You are magic.
You are light.
You are here for a reason.
Don't let anyone (yourself included) tell you any less. 😌

You are art, poetry in motion, and the sparkle in your eyes so so precious to me. And on days you forget this, and you feel so insignificant and small, I hope you put your hand over your heart and remeber that you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. I hope you know you are heard in the loudest storm. I hope you know that there is no harm in NOT knowing the answers to every question right here and now. I hope when you lay on your pillow at night, instead of tears wetting the fabric, your smile blesses the softness beneath your head.

I hope....you never leave.
I hope....you never go.
I hope...you continue to create despite the fear that rages inside you so.
I hope...you are brave enough to chase your dreams.
I hope...you believe in you as much as I believe in you.
I hope...you give you the best of you since you spend so much time giving/showing everyone else the best of them.

I hope...you fly and never come down.

I hope.

I believe.

In.

You.

Love,

Bekah

✨ DEAR 2020....✨ Thank you for the lessons... ✨ DEAR 2020....✨

Thank you for the lessons....thank you for the moments I was challenged to change my perspective, to change for the better despite the pain of the moment, the growth I saw in myself despite my circumstance, the opprotunities I had to step outside my comfort zone.

Here's to a new adventure, to stepping out in trust, and to learning to love myself and heal my relationship with food, and hopefully signing a book contract. 😱

I cannot wait to see what you bring!

Also, because I took myself way too seriously in 2020....I'm starting 2021 off with something a bit more candid....hence the bunny ears. 😂 🤷‍♀️ Whaaa??? It's been a year and if you laughed at this, I'm glad. You deserve to laugh, to feel joy, and to chase your dreams.

Let the journey begin!

✨ WHO’S HERE FOR THE ANGST? 👀 ✨ I’m a ✨ WHO’S HERE FOR THE ANGST? 👀 ✨

I’m a gal who loves her angst, okay? Give me books, movies, and TV shows with all the turmoil. Yes, I may bawl for ten minutes straight after every chapter (*stares aggressively at a certain story*), scream at the TV screen, or go through a whole box of tissues (this really happened) in a movie, but despite all the trauma, I just can’t get enough. 🤩

Which is also probably why I love giving MY readers angst. All the angst. Angst enough to make them run out of their room screaming at 12 AM and cry on their sister’s floor (true story), but what does one do when they--don’t angst?

Some of us prefer to torture our characters a bit more than others, which is fine, but every book has gotta have a little tension in order to keep your reader invested. So, in order to spark a little angsty inspiration, I’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you harness your fictional angst and pack a punch for your reader and pull at their heartstrings.

1: LISTEN TO SAD MUSIC - when writing a scene full of emotional depth, grab the saddest songs you can find and play them while you work. I find that the more emotional the score I’m listening to, the more emotion I’m able to pour into my writing. I recommend Dark Academia playlists or movie scores on @Youtube and @Spotiy for this!

2: VAGUENESS IS KEY - don’t do info dumps, reveal to us little by little the trauma your character has been through. Vague dream scenes, flashbacks (though not too many!), and description makes the reader think and create inner tension.

3: GAUGE YOUR REACTION: - if you aren’t crying, your readers probably aren’t either.

4 - LEAVE SOME THINGS OPEN TO INTERPRETATION: Not everything needs a solid answer, let it flow and leave a bite for your readers to nibble on long after they’ve finished a chapter or the book.

5 - DON'T WRITE ANGST JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT: If you're overly sensitive and compassionate, stay fluffy! Nothings wrong with that! Do you, boo!

Do you like angst in stories? If so, do you like emotional angst or romantic angst the best? I’m a bit of both, but gosh, emotional gets me every time. Also, if these tips helped, smash that save button!
✨ ARE YOU A MORNING WRITER OR A NIGHT WRITER? ✨

I used to be a hardcore night writer, and still am on occasion, but for the past several months, I've been a morning writer alll the way.

An early morning writer actually.

Now, don't go getting any crazy ideas. I am not *NOT* getting up at 5 AM to write. I'm sorry, but that's just asking too much. 😂 7 AM is my sweet spot, which is huge for me considering I used to get up at 9 AM. 😌 Growth, we love her.

For me, morning writing has been very effective because I'm usually the only one up and it's very quiet, allowing me the space to create with no fear of judgement and llimited distractions. Did you know that morning writers make less mistakes when they work in the morning?

Yeah, no, who ever those writers are they must be superheros because my morning drafts are so freaking messy. 😂

When @wendelinvand came on @the_hope_prose_podcast, she gave me the advice of always reading what I have written during the day right before I go to sleep, that way my brain is thinking about it, problem solving, plotting, and soaking in the creative juices all night that way when I return to my draft in the morning, I'm ready to go and inspired.

I have been implementing it and guys, it works. 😳 It really really works!

Also, speaking of the podcast, we had a new episode go live, so if your interested in why our recent guest (@tab_caplinger) wants to be toast, her love for all things Marvel, her newest book THE WOLF QUEEN, and what inspires the names of her characters....the link is in my bio. ✨

Also, no shame or hate if you are a night writer. As I said before, I still write at night, just not as often. Do what works for you, boo and own it. 💪
